چکیده

J. Zhuo, V. A. Stenger, F. E. Boada University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, United States Synopsis We demonstrate the use of a reversed (outside in) echo planar imaging (EPI) k-space trajectory for the reduction of susceptibility artifacts in BOLD fMRI. Our results indicate that the proposed technique has artifact reduction properties similar to those of reversed spiral imaging and that it can be easily implemented in clinical scanners as a minor modification of the conventional EPI technique.

Effect of Phase-Encoding Reduction on Geometric Distortion and BOLD Signal Changes in fMRI

Introduction Echo-planar imaging (EPI) is a group of fast data acquisition methods commonly used in fMRI studies. It acquires multiple image lines in k-space after a single excitation, which leads to a very short scan time. A well-known problem with EPI is that it is more sensitive to distortions due to the used encoding scheme. Source of distortion is inhomogeneity in the static B0 field that ...

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore brain function: cortical representations of language critical areas

Pre-operative determination of the dominant hemisphere for speech and speech associated sensory and motor regions has been of great interest for the neurological surgeons. This dilemma has been of at most importance, but difficult to achieve, requiring either invasive (Wada test) or non-invasive methods (Brain Mapping). In the present study we have employed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging...

Reduced susceptibility effects in perfusion fMRI with single-shot spin-echo EPI acquisitions at 1.5 Tesla.

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion contrast is not based on susceptibility effects and can therefore be used to study brain function in regions of high static inhomogeneity. As a proof of concept, single-shot spin-echo echo-planar imaging (EPI) acquisition was carried out with a multislice continuous ASL (CASL) method at 1.5T. A bilateral finger tapping paradigm was used in the presence of ...

Optimal EPI parameters for reduction of susceptibility-induced BOLD sensitivity losses: a whole-brain analysis at 3 T and 1.5 T.

Most functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies record the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal using fast gradient-echo echo-planar imaging (GE EPI). However, GE EPI can suffer from substantial signal dropout caused by inhomogeneities in the static magnetic field. These field inhomogeneities occur near air/tissue interfaces, because they are generated by variations in magnetic ...

Multiple gradient- and spin-echo EPI acquisition technique with z-shimming to compensate for susceptibility-induced off- resonance effects

INTRODUCTION – Images obtained with gradient-echo echo planar imaging (GRE-EPI) suffer from magnetic field variations within the brain, such as in regions adjacent to air-tissue interfaces. In these regions, magnetic field inhomogeneities cause spins to dephase more rapidly, resulting in signal dropouts. Thus, conventional GRE-EPI pulse sequences used for dynamic susceptibility-contrast perfusi...
